DESIGN 1: INSPIRATION
When I first became interested in mosaic I knew I wanted to attempt an effect which was reminiscent of the great roman mosaic floors. Looking to keep it simple I looked for inspiration in the world around me. The inspiration for this first piece was a combination of this crumbling urn in my back garden and a book on the art of the ancient Greeks. Of course, that’s a bit of a classical mixture but the result had the feel I wanted.
The beauty of working in mosaic is that you don’t have to be a great artist. A simple heavy outline drawing should give you the starting point you need. Your greatest challenge may be to get your design to the right size for your base. Look around you to nature for inspiration. Look for strong shapes that will look good in outline but have colourful highlights. Fishes and lizards always make a good starting point! Taking photographs will help you to simplify the image.
